Component ML-NMR reconstructs each aggregate arm’s joint effect-modifier distribution from marginal summaries using parametric margins, quasi-Monte Carlo points, and a Gaussian copula, and then treats those margins and that correlation as fixed. This is inherited ML-NMR practice rather than a component-specific choice, and part of it has been addressed upstream: multinma 0.6.0 adjusts the correlation matrix used to generate integration points to the underlying Gaussian copula so output correlations better match the requested inputs. What remains open is that reconstruction uncertainty is not propagated into reported intervals in any implementation, and that a Gaussian copula imposes symmetric, tail-independent dependence which may be wrong however well the correlation is calibrated; vine copulas are not implemented.

Yes, modestly on the log odds and log hazard scales and strongly on the log rate scale. With margins and correlation matched, the calibrated Gaussian erred by up to 0.034 on the log odds ratio and 0.032 on the log cumulative hazard ratio (above 0.02 in 5 of 16 primary cells), with opposite signs for lower- and upper-tail dependence, and by up to 0.63 on the log rate ratio. The error plateaued by 256 integration points. A wrong flexible family was worse than the Gaussian in 61% of comparisons, so the defensible report is an envelope over families. Read the study below.

Statement

Why it is open

Published target and aggregate summaries almost never include a joint distribution, so the joint must be assembled from marginals and assumed dependence, and because the outcome model is integrated over that joint through a nonlinear inverse link, errors in dependence and tails propagate directly into standardized outcomes with no target IPD to check against. The latent-to-observed correlation transformation has a closed form only for special margin combinations, so mixed and discrete margins require numerical inversion that component implementations currently approximate. Neither the component implementation nor multinma represents the reconstruction itself as a source of uncertainty in reported intervals.

cpaic 0.1.0 (development version, choxos/cpaic@9d150e9) unreleased development R package on GitHub, not on CRAN; builds each aggregate arm’s integration distribution from parametric margins, Sobol points, and a Gaussian copula, treats margins and correlation as fixed, approximates non-normal observed-to-latent correlations with a warning, defaults binary covariates to Bernoulli, and implements no vine copula

Probable solution or research direction

Adopt the upstream correlation calibration rather than re-deriving it, and extend it with numerical inversion for arbitrary margin combinations including mixed and discrete margins. Offer vine copulas for asymmetric and tail-dependent dependence and report sensitivity envelopes across dependence specifications, since a single Gaussian copula cannot be checked against anything. Represent target-distribution uncertainty explicitly in the posterior, use robust moment classes that bound the estimand over families of joints consistent with the reported margins, and validate against target IPD wherever it exists.

Our study

Calibrating the correlation does not fix the copula: the family moves a standardized contrast by up to 0.03 on the log odds and log hazard scales

The question put to it. Once a Gaussian copula’s correlation is calibrated to the reported correlations, can the remaining error from copula family (asymmetry and tail dependence) move a target-standardized contrast?

What it found.

Results.

  • Identity link: every error exactly zero, as the second-order argument requires.
  • Uncalibrated versus calibrated Gaussian: at most 0.001 apart on the logit and complementary log-log scales.
  • Envelope over five families contained a t-copula truth outside them in 22 of 24 cells, median width 0.044.
  • Matched-correlation control narrowly failed: 0.0057 against a 0.005 tolerance, within the check’s Monte Carlo error.

Verification

Verdict. Unverifiable. Auditors disagreed and the disagreement was evidence-bearing on both sides.

The source said. “Component PAIC reconstructs the target joint covariate distribution from marginal summaries plus an assumed dependence structure, currently a Gaussian copula. Nonlinear outcome models depend on correlations, tails, and mixed margin types rather than on marginal means alone, and the mapping from a reported observed correlation to the latent Gaussian correlation is only approximate when margins are non-normal.”

What was wrong with it. The auditors split on the latent-correlation half: the literature auditor found it already corrected upstream in multinma 0.6.0’s add_integration(), while GPT-5.6 Sol confirmed the component implementation at choxos/cpaic@9d150e9 still approximates it, so the text keeps the weaker claim and scopes the open part to uncertainty propagation and non-Gaussian dependence. GPT-5.6 Sol also found the source’s warning claim partly false: binary IPD covariates default to Bernoulli, but an explicit normal-margin override for a binary covariate is accepted without the claimed warning, and the issue belongs to the aggregate-data integration path rather than to the package generally.

Dissent. literature dissented (supported-with-caveat): The Gaussian-copula reconstruction is not a cpaic design choice but the published ML-NMR standard: Phillippo et al. 2020 state ‘Covariate correlation structures are accounted for by using copulas.’ More importantly, the latent-to-observed correlation problem the entry raises has an implemented upstream fix. multinma 0.6.0 NEWS: ‘The correlation matrix for generating integration points with add_integration() for ML-NMR models is now adjusted to the underlying Gaussian copula, so that the output correlations of the integration points better match the requested input correlations.’ The corresponding numerical problem - matching a target Pearson correlation through a Gaussian copula with arbitrary or discrete margins - is a solved one in the NORTA simulation literature via root-finding on the latent correlation (I did not retrieve a specific paper and give no locator). What remains genuinely open is propagating reconstruction uncertainty into reported intervals (also absent from multinma) and non-Gaussian, tail-dependent dependence such as vine copulas. Scope the entry to those two. codex dissented (open): The requested 9d150e9 source is behaviorally identical here to live aaa76c9; the later changes affect only src/Makevars.win. C1-C4, C6, and C7 are supported specifically for cmlnmr(): it constructs each AgD arm’s integration distribution using parametric margins, Sobol points, and a Gaussian copula; treats the resulting margins and correlation as fixed; approximates non-normal observed-to-latent correlations; and has no vine-copula implementation. For nonlinear inverse links, the integrated outcome generally depends on the distribution of the linear predictor, including relevant dependence and tail behavior. C5 is false in part: 0/1 IPD covariates default to Bernoulli, and gamma/lognormal/beta correlation approximations trigger a warning, but a user can explicitly override a binary covariate to a normal margin without the claimed warning. The report also generalizes a cmlnmr AgD-integration feature to cpaic generally. This is high severity only when the nonlinear estimand is materially sensitive to the unspecified dependence or tails.
