Does meta-research have a file drawer?
Written against the design standard. Every number below that is not a search count is a plan, not a measurement. Paired with P11, which uses the protocol and results pairs this study constructs.
1. The question
Meta-research measures non-publication in other fields and treats it as waste. It publishes its own protocols in journals such as BMJ Open and Systematic Reviews, and nobody has checked how many of those protocols are followed by the study they describe. If the field’s own protocols go unpublished at a high rate, it has the file drawer it documents elsewhere.
2. Prior work, and the search behind the novelty claim
Log key P10 in data/lit/novelty-log.json, relevance-ordered.
corpus regex: (meta-research|methodological|meta-epidemiolog).{0,60}protocol.{0,80}
(publish|non-publication|results)
PubMed: (protocol*[ti]) AND ("publication rate"[tiab] OR "non-publication"[tiab]
OR "subsequently published"[tiab]) AND ("systematic review*"[tiab]
OR "meta-research"[tiab] OR "methodological"[tiab])
Six PubMed records and five corpus records. The closest are a 2013 protocol for a systematic review of non-publication of research in general (PMID 23302739) and a 2026 study of how evidence-synthesis protocols report software (PMID 42035815). The corpus holds a study of what evidence syntheses reveal about registries such as PROSPERO and OSF (PMID 41847079). None follows meta-research protocols forward to their results.
3. Hypothesis
A meta-research protocol published in a journal is followed by a results paper within 36 months less often than a trial protocol published in the same journal in the same year.
Null. The hazard ratio for results publication, meta-research against trial protocols, is 1.
What would falsify it. A hazard ratio at or above 1. Meta-research has no regulatory obligation to publish and much of it is student work, which is the reasoning behind the direction. The reverse finding would be as publishable.
4. Design and unit
Retrospective cohort of published protocols. The unit is one protocol, and the event is the first results paper linked to it. Follow-up starts at the protocol’s publication date and is censored at 36 months or at 2026-09-22, whichever comes first (S10).
5. Sample
Exposed: protocols published 2012 to 2022 whose title contains “protocol” and whose title or abstract names a meta-research design (meta-research, meta-epidemiological, methodological study, research on research, cross-sectional analysis of published articles).
Comparison: trial protocols (title contains “protocol” and publication type or abstract names a randomized trial) from the same journal and publication year, sampled 2 to 1 without replacement (S9). A journal-year with fewer than two trial protocols contributes all it has and is weighted accordingly; a journal-year with none drops its exposed protocols, and the count is reported.
The window ends in 2022 so that every protocol has had at least 36 months in which to be followed by results.
6. Exposure
Protocol type, meta-research or trial, from the eligibility rules in section 5.
7. Outcome and instrument
A results paper counts as linked when it (a) cites the protocol, or shares at least one author with it and (b) has title token similarity above a threshold fixed in probe PB, and (c) is published after the protocol. Candidates come from OpenAlex citing works and from each protocol author’s later works.
The linkage is an instrument with two error modes: missing a results paper whose title changed and which does not cite the protocol, and pairing a protocol with an unrelated later paper by the same group.
8. Validation gate
The author links 150 protocols by hand, stratified by type and by whether the algorithm found a match, against a written rubric published with the protocol. Sensitivity and specificity of the linkage are computed separately for each protocol type, because differential linkage error between arms would bias the hazard ratio directly (S3). If sensitivity differs between arms by more than 0.10, the study reports arm-specific corrected estimates and does not report an uncorrected hazard ratio.
9. Analysis
In R.
coxph(Surv(months, published) ~ type + strata(match_set), data = d)Stratification on the match set conditions on journal and year. Preregistered alongside: cumulative incidence curves by type, a logistic model on publication by 36 months, and a probabilistic bias analysis using the linkage error measured in section 8.
10. Threats
| threat | handling | removed or disclosed | standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linkage misses renamed results papers | Measured per arm by the gate; corrected estimates when arms differ | Disclosed | S3 |
| Results published outside indexed journals | Theses and reports are invisible to OpenAlex and are not events | Disclosed | |
| Trial protocols are pushed by registration law | That is the contrast being studied, not a confounder of it | Disclosed | |
| Protocol window chosen to allow follow-up | Fixed before any data retrieved | Removed | S10 |
| Journal differences | Matched on journal and year, stratified analysis | Removed | S9 |
11. Probes
None of these tabulates the outcome by the exposure (S1).
| probe | computes | goes to | what would change the design | status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PA | exposed and comparison protocol counts per journal-year, after eligibility | 5 | fewer than 200 meta-research protocols makes the hazard ratio imprecise; the window widens to 2010 | not run |
| PB | linkage on a pilot slice of 40 protocols removed from the sample, to set the title-similarity threshold | 7 | a threshold that cannot separate linked from unlinked pairs means linkage needs the author throughout | not run |
| PC | power by simulation for the stratified Cox model at the realized counts | 9 | a detectable hazard ratio above 1.5 makes the study uninformative | not run |
| PD | the author’s 150 hand linkages | 8 | arm-differential linkage error triggers the corrected-estimate rule | needs the author |
12. What this cannot show
- Why a protocol went unpublished. Abandonment, rejection and a changed question look the same.
- Whether the results that were published are the ones promised; that is P11.
