When two meta-research studies measure the same thing, do they agree?
This is the strongest novelty claim of the set and the weakest on feasibility. Section 2 records the searches that establish the first; probe PA decides the second.
1. The question
Meta-research tells other fields that a finding which does not replicate is not a finding. The field publishes many studies measuring the same practices: reporting quality in a specialty, data sharing in a set of journals, registration adherence in a trial population. Their samples overlap. Nobody has asked whether they agree.
If two meta-research studies measuring the same practice over overlapping literature report materially different rates, the field’s own evidence base has the property it criticizes elsewhere.
2. Novelty, with the searches that establish it
Claims of novelty in this project must show the search that produced them, because a model-recalled absence of prior work is not evidence of absence.
Corpus regex, over 1830 tier A records and 7412 frame records, title and abstract:
(concordan|discordan|agreement|consisten).{0,50}between.{0,40}
(methodological review|meta-research|cross-sectional stud).{0,40}(same|identical)
|overlapping (methodological|meta-research)
Result: 0 records.
What does exist, and is the closest prior work, is PMID 37433624, a systematic review with individual participant data meta-analysis of studies investigating data and code sharing. It pools meta-research studies; it does not ask whether they agree with each other. That distinction is the study.
This section is updated, not deleted, if review finds prior work the searches missed.
3. Hypothesis
Pairs of meta-research studies measuring the same practice in overlapping populations report rates that differ by more than sampling error alone would produce.
Primary null. Between-study heterogeneity in the paired rate difference is consistent with sampling variation.
What would falsify it. Heterogeneity consistent with chance, which would be a strong positive result about the field and is the outcome the field would hope for.
4. Sample
The unit is a pair, and pairs are what the probe must count before anything else is decided. Candidate pairs come from two places:
- The included-study lists of meta-research syntheses already in the corpus. PMID 37433624 is the largest and its included studies are, by construction, meta-research studies measuring the same construct.
- The corpus itself, matched on topic block plus the population studied, extracted from the abstract.
A pair qualifies when both studies measure the same practice, in the same discipline or journal set, over overlapping publication years, and both report an extractable rate with a denominator.
5. Outcome
The absolute difference in reported rate between the two members of a pair, with each study’s own denominator, so that the expected difference under sampling variation alone is computable.
6. Analysis
In R. For each pair, the observed rate difference against the difference expected from the two binomial denominators. Aggregated as an excess-heterogeneity statistic across pairs, with a permutation null built by pairing studies that do not share a population.
The permutation null is the part that makes this a test rather than a description: without it, any two rates differ and the result is unfalsifiable.
7. Threats, and what happened to each
| threat | what was done | removed or disclosed |
|---|---|---|
| “Same practice” is a judgment | Pair eligibility is adjudicated by the author against written criteria, not by a model | Disclosed |
| Overlapping samples are not identical samples | The expected difference accounts for denominators but not for which specific articles were sampled; partial overlap inflates apparent disagreement | Disclosed |
| Pairs may not exist in usable numbers | Probe PA counts them before anything else | Removed by the probe, or the study ends |
| Publication years differ, and practice changes | Pairs restricted to overlapping year ranges; year gap reported per pair | Disclosed |
| Reported rates use different denominators for the same word | Every rate is re-extracted with its denominator rather than taken from an abstract percentage | Removed |
8. Probes
| probe | computes | goes to | what would change the design | status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PA | candidate pairs from the included-study list of PMID 37433624 and from corpus matching | 4 | fewer than 10 usable pairs makes this an agenda item | outstanding |
| PB | how many candidate pairs have an extractable rate and denominator in both members | 5 | below about 20 the permutation null is not usable | outstanding, depends on PA |
| PC | author adjudication of “same practice” on the candidates | 4 | disagreement with the written criteria means the criteria are wrong, not the pairs | outstanding, needs the author |
Deviations
Recorded on the result page: what changed, when, why, and the estimate before and after where that can be computed. A deviation is not a failure; concealing one is.
What this cannot show
- It cannot say which member of a disagreeing pair is right.
- It cannot separate genuine disagreement from different but equally defensible definitions of the same practice, which may be the most common cause of any disagreement found.
